چکیده

T HE phenomenon to which Pollack gives the name "stepwise shortening" (though he claims that similar steps occur also during passive lengthening) is clearly of great interest if it is genuine; indeed, Pollack claims that it requires fundamental rethinking of current ideas about the mechanism of contraction. Before any such conclusion can be reached, however, three questions must be answered: First, is the phenomenon genuine? Two of Pollack's methods have been severely criticised, and in my view he has not answered those criticisms. Second, if the phenomenon is genuine, is it related to events in the contractile mechanism itself? The fact that it is claimed to occur during stretch and release of unstimulated fibers, and even in fibers so far extended that there is no overlap of thick and thin filaments, suggests that passive elements are responsible. Third, if in some cases the steps do arise in the contraction process, does this imply that current theories are wrong? They could be manifestations of the phenomenon well known under the name "isotohic transients". I will address myself to these three questions in that order. I may as well say at the outset that I am not convinced that the phenomenon is real. The deviations from smooth shortening are small (order of ± 0.1% of sarcomere length) and none of the methods used by Pollack and his collaborators has been shown to be free from errors sufficient to give the appearance of "steps" of this magnitude.

Quantal mechanisms in cardiac contraction.

SERENDIPITY and technology have combined forces to reveal a phenomenon of striking proportions. What may prove to be the quantum element underlying contraction was discovered by chance, following the development of a high-resolution optical diffractometer designed to follow the dynamics of shortening in isolated cardiac muscle. Records showed a most unusual feature: periods of sarcomere shorten...

Comments on relaxed $(gamma, r)$-cocoercive mappings

We show that the variational inequality $VI(C,A)$ has aunique solution for a relaxed $(gamma , r)$-cocoercive,$mu$-Lipschitzian mapping $A: Cto H$ with $r>gamma mu^2$, where$C$ is a nonempty closed convex subset of a Hilbert space $H$. Fromthis result, it can be derived that, for example, the recentalgorithms given in the references of this paper, despite theirbecoming more complicated, are not...

Rhododendron dauricum L. is an ancient Chinese traditional herb. The pharmacological effects of R. dauricum extract have been shown in chronic tracheitis. The aim of this study was to investigate the cardiovascular effects of Rhododendron dauricum L. flavonoids (RF) on rats and its mechanisms. This study was performed in isolated vascular rings and a rat model of myocardial infarction and isola...

Manufacturing a Biomimetic Biorecator in Cardiac Tissue Engineering

Introduction: The direct approach of cardiac tissue engineering is to mimic the natural tissue of heart, considering the significant role of scaffolding and mechanical simulation.  Methods: To achieve this purpose, a composite Polycaprolactone (PCL)/Gelatin electrospun scaffold with a ratio of 70:30 and with the most similarities to the cardiac extracellular matrix was fabricated with aligned ...
